Deadheading at dusk

Monday, May 7th from 6:00 p.m. till dark, join volunteers at the Historic City Cemetery’s Rose Garden for deadheading at dusk. We will be removing spent blooms from the many rosebushes and tidying up the garden which encourages repeat blooming of the roses in the garden. If you have buckets and tools, please bring them, otherwise tools and training will be provided. Light refreshments will be served. The workshop is free, but donations are gratefully accepted to help support rose garden operations. Sacramento Historic City Cemetery is located at 1000 Broadway in Sacramento. Old garden roses talk & tour

For three Sundays in a row, join Rosarian Anita Clevenger and others to learn everything you always wanted to know about heritage roses. The talks will include a fascinating lecture (topics below) and a lovely Sunday afternoon stroll through the internationally recognized Historic Rose Garden.

  • April 22: Graceful Tea, China and Noisette roses, favorites of the 19th century
  • April 29: Repeat-blooming Bourbon and Hybrid Perpetual roses
  • May 6: Once-blooming European roses (some dating from ancient times) – Albas, Gallicas, Centifolia, Damask, and Moss roses will be featured

Enjoy the beauty of this cemetery garden in full bloom while you learn about roses rarely seen today. The events are free but donations are gratefully accepted and help support rose garden operations. All talks start at 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. Come walk through pathways covered in roses while you hear tales of love in years gone-by. Costumed docents and actors will tell about how couples met and how they died, and recount legends about roses, the symbol of love. Bring somebody you love, breathe in the perfume of the roses around you, and enjoy a lovely evening in our award-winning Historic Rose Garden in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery. 1000 Broadway, Sacramento, CA 95818.

Open gardens and rose sale

On Saturday, April 14th, from 9:30a-2:00p, the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery will hold its annual Open Gardens event, featuring the sale of over 500 rose plants propagated from our rare and historic rose collection. There will be tours of the Historic Rose Garden (at 10:00a and 12:30p), a history tour (at 11:00a), a silent auction, and sale of rose-related merchandise. The Historic Rose Garden, winner of multiple international awards, will be at peak bloom. Visitors will be surrounded by fragrant roses set amidst our lovely Gold Rush garden cemetery. The combination is not to be missed! On Sunday, April 15, the rose sale continues from 11:00a-1:00p (no tours will be given). Details are at cemeteryrose.org. Saturday, April 7, 2018, 9:00a-12:00p The Historic Rose Garden in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery will be hosting a "Primping Party" to weed and tidy up the cemetery plots in preparation for spring events. Adult volunteers (over 18 years old) are needed on Saturday, April 7th from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Please bring gloves and weeding tools if you have them. If you don't know how to pull weeds, we will teach you! Come enjoy our beautiful, historic cemetery and its award-winning rose garden, and help it look its best. Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Join Historic Rose Garden curator Anita Clevenger to see and smell spring flowers that have emerged from a brief winter slumber and are blooming brightly throughout the garden. Visitors will have an opportunity to tour the garden, spending time with the volunteers who created and care for it. The Historic Rose Garden is nestled among the cemetery's monuments, re-creating the garden cemetery that was established in 1849. The Sacramento Historic City Cemetery is registered as a National Historic District. In spring, the combination of blooms and tombs are at their best. Please note that rain will cancel the event.
