The winners of the 2016 Calling All Dreamers competition presented by the Downtown Sacramento Foundation (DSF) have officially opened a downtown Oblivion Comics & Coffee storefront. Centrally located in the downtown core and easily walkable from the State Capitol, Golden 1 Center and the Sacramento Convention Center, co-owners Laura Benson and Neil Estaris opened a 2,600 square foot storefront in May that is a fresh and new retail concept in the local market. In addition to an impressive comic book selection (Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, IDW, Image and Valiant, to name a few) along with popular action figures and posters, Oblivion Comics & Coffee offers specialty coffee from Chocolate Fish plus pastries and artisan toast with vegan options.

Oblivion Comics & Coffee has a welcoming and inviting seating area and the shop is decorated with artistic designs created by talented local artists. In fact, the popular local artist named “Nooligan” created an impressive and distinctive wall mural near the shop’s entrance and action figure photographer ARCtroop Wong created realistic Star Wars photography that is visible throughout the shop.

“We’re thrilled the Calling All Dreamers competition provided a platform for Oblivion Comics & Coffee to tap into the amazing energy happening in Sacramento’s urban core right now and bring this new retail concept to the area,” said Valerie Mamone, Business Development Sr. Manager of Downtown Sacramento Partnership. “We hope this new storefront opening will inspire and encourage other entrepreneurs to develop and bring their innovative business concepts downtown.”

A first-time joint venture for Benson and Estaris, the concept has been in development for over three years and was made possible due to the Calling All Dreamers competition.

Each year, Calling All Dreamers contestants compete for a coveted business start-up package that is designed to provide the winner with essential resources and helpful tools needed to successfully launch a downtown storefront. In addition, DSF helps the winning entrepreneur navigate a variety of challenges faced by many business owners during their first year in business.

Economic development and small business growth is a top priority for the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, a Property Based Improvement District (PBID) focused on downtown Sacramento and sister organization to the DSF. Now in its 5th year and with the addition of Oblivion Comics & Coffee, Calling All Dreamers has helped 16 local businesses open; created 26 full-time and 67 part-time jobs; and leased more than 20,500 square feet of space.

In 2016 alone, five dreamers opened a storefront – three within the downtown district served by Downtown Sacramento Partnership.  Some of the contestants of the annual Calling All Dreamers competition include the following: Allspicery, Andy’s Candy Apothecary, The Dailey Method, Sun & Soil, Off the Chain Bike Bus Tours, Metro Juice, Benjamin’s Shoes, Whired Wine, Studio Fig, and more. The Shark Tank-style competition takes qualified applicants through a business development program that calls for extensive business planning, market research, proof of financial sustainability, and more.
