Auto Museum celebrates 30 years with  rides in fire trucks, 30 cent ice cream & more!

The California Automobile Museum – which first opened on May 1, 1987 – is recognizing 30 years of history, art and technology with a special celebration on Saturday, May 6, 2017 that includes rides in historic fire trucks from the 1920s to the 1960s, 30 cent ice cream, a children’s story time activity, and more! Rides are offered 10 a.m. to noon and again 1 to 3 p.m.  Rides in historic fire trucks are free (although a donation of $5 is suggested)

These special activities are made possible by participation from involved community organizations such as the Sacramento Fire Museum, Shriner’s Hospital Fire Brigade, West Sacramento Fire Department, City of Davis Centennial, Firefighters Burn Institute, Sacramento Fire Department and the Sacramento Fire Reserves.

With summer just around the corner, the Midtown Association (MA) is pleased to announce exciting special activities happening in May at the popular and thriving Midtown Farmers Market. Proudly sponsored by Sutter Health, the Midtown Farmers Market offers up to 90 farmer, grower and vendor booths bursting with fresh fruit, produce, and gourmet or locally made goods each week.  The year-round market takes place on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 20th Street from J Street to Kayak Alley.*  

In addition to a convenient bike valet – perfectly timed for National Bike Month in May and presented in partnership with Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates – guests to the Midtown Farmers Market can enjoy the following:

Midtown’s massive saber battle returns bigger and brighter

Science fiction fans in Sacramento won’t have to use a mystical force to have a good time when Saber Battle rolls through Midtown on Thursday night, May 4, 2017 from 8 to 10 p.m.

Massive fan-run events in cities from coast to coast have brought together generations of fans to participate in massive saber battles, watch swordplay masters show off expert moves, and dress up as their favorite sci-fi movie characters at a themed party in cities across North America. This May, the fun returns to Midtown Sacramento.   

In partnership with the Midtown Association and Visit Sacramento, the fan group Newmindspace aims to bring the fun and free community event, martial arts spectacle, and thousands of glowing sabers to fans of all ages. In December 2015, the group broke the world record for Largest Global Light Sword battle, and this spring aims even higher.

The dedicated and diverse Sacramento area museum community is gearing up for the 2017 Big Day of Giving scheduled for Thursday, May 4, 2017, in hopes local contributors will choose to support their endeavors during this special giving challenge. For the past few years, more than $16 million has been raised for local nonprofits from throughout the region, state, country and world.

The Sacramento area is rich with an amazing array of state-of-the-art museums and historic sites that offer visitors the chance to explore California’s fine art, history, science, and wildlife treasures all year long. For the 2017 Big Day of Giving, a dozen Sacramento Area Museum members are participating in this collaborative effort that is focused locally but extends globally, including:

Saturday, April 29, 2017, 10:00 a.m. Come join a one hour guided tour of the Hamilton Square Garden in the beautiful Historic City Cemetery. With 800 plus unusual Mediterranean perennial plants the garden has drought tolerant color all year long. Meet at the tenth street gate.

The class will include a fascinating lecture and tour of the rose garden. The class is free but donations are gratefully accepted and help support rose garden operations.

William Jessup University holding inaugural athletic fundraiser at Topgolf in Roseville

The Jessup Athletic Association will host the inaugural TopSwing event – a fun gathering, providing golf, games, food, beverages, prizes and awards – on Sunday, April 23 at Topgolf entertainment complex in Roseville.

TopSwing takes place from 4-8 p.m. and is a unique fundraising event for William Jessup University Athletics that is designed for both golfers and non-golfers. No golf skills are necessary.

TopSwing is open to the public for both sponsorship and participation. All proceeds raised at the event will go directly to support William Jessup University athletic programs with scholarships, improved team facilities, and help reduce student debt. The fundraiser at Topgolf will become a yearly event.
